SomnoGuard SP Soft and Hard after fitting

This oral appliance is available in the marketplace with two different thermoplastic impression materials, i.e. SomnoGuard SP Soft and SomnoGuard SP Hard. SomnoGuard SP consists of two identical trays. The lining of the identical trays of SomnoGuard SP Soft consists of a soft transparent copolymeric material. Contrarily, SomnoGuard SP Hard is another variant with its trays filled by a hard white copolymeric impression material. After the fitting process teeth are embedded firmly either into the soft or hard thermoplastic material. Two connectors of equal length combine laterally the upper and lower jaw trays and enable the advancement of the lower jaw. Depending on the length of the connector pair chosen, advancement is possible up to + 10 mm. This type of mandibular positioner can also be worn by patients with a retrognathic bite.

Whereas the soft variant SomnoGuard SP Soft offers a high comfort of use, the most remarkable feature of the SomnoGuard SP Hard is its firm and stable retention. It may be sometimes a good decision to combine the specific strengths of the two SomnoGuard SP variants „Hard“ and „Soft“,e.g. by using a soft transparent lining tray to fit the upper teeth and a second tray filled with the hard white copolymer to fit the teeth of the lower jaw.

The telescopic connectors being optionally available on demand for experienced medical specialists enable wide mouth opening and mouth breathing. Silicone eleastics at the front of the oral appliance prevent effectively the lower jaw from falling back at sleep and thus the narrowing of the upper airway.

The variant SomnoGuard SP Hard or even a single tray of this type of oral device should only be fitted by medical professionals or dentists being experienced to use this mouldable dental impression material in an adequate way.
